In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RTI International is conducting a rigorous evaluation of a teen-focused, asthma intervention program—Power Breathing—in two school districts in Kansas and Virginia. Our approach consisted of a four-stage process that included: (1) groundwork, (2) formalization, (3) implementation, and (4) utilization. Within this framework, we employed a quasi-experimental design that utilized matched comparison schools and pre-post testing and mixed-mode data collection techniques to gather both quantitative and qualitative data across relevant domains. We will present: the rationale for this approach; evaluation criteria for the selection of participating schools and students with asthma; a framework for conducting process, impact and outcome evaluations; and analysis and results from these evaluations, including an assessment of self-reported asthma symptoms and quality of life, and asthma-related events. We will also offer lessons learned from the experience in conceptualizing the theoretical framework for the study design and in following the approach taken for the conduct of the study.
