Media provide important role in educating people about the current issues in their society and the world at large. Media also provide a major role in forming people's opinion about important social issues in their life and shaping their behavior.
The present paper tries to assess how press media covers and presents gender-based violence (GBV) in Bangladesh. Is the coverage adequate, given prominence and is gender sensitive? Are they trying to create conducive environment to reduce GBV by highlighting the problems and its adverse consequences? Is the coverage helpful in stimulating healthy debate on the subject?
To collect the data, news items related with gender issues in nine national newspapers of Bangladesh were analyzed. The paper cutting was done for five months. Each published news item, editorial or article on the subject (GBV) was analyzed for its content and details of the information provided. Besides this, the page number on which the item had appeared, location of the item on the specific page and space used were also recorded.
In five months altogether 892 news items related to gender based violence were recorded. The paper presents the content analysis of these items. Besides this the paper also gives an estimation of the actual and percentage of the total space newspaper give in covering GBV news items. Using prevailing rate of advertisement, the paper also gives an estimate of the cost of the space used for highlighting GBV.
