Nurturing clinical and basic science faculty of color at Harvard Medical School: A model on leadership and career enhancement in academic medicine

Jabbar R. Bennett, PhD, Jamae K. K. Kawauchi, JD, and Joan Y. Reede, MD, MPH, MS. Office for Diversity and Community Partnership, Harvard Medical School, 164 Longwood Avenue, 2nd Floor, Boston, MA 02115, 6174321557, jabbar_bennett@hms.harvard.edu

The underrepresentation of clinical and basic science faculty of color in academic medicine institutions impacts the ability of the health care system to address issues of minority health, health disparity research, and minority health policy advocacy. In order to appropriately address these needs and nurture faculty of color in our institution our organization instituted several programs. Three of which are the Commonwealth Fund Harvard University Fellowship (CFHUF) in Minority Health Policy, the California Endowment Scholars (CES) in Health Policy at Harvard University, and the Center of Excellence (COE) in Minority Health and Health Disparities Faculty Fellowship Program. Each program offers a wide array of professional development activities. The CFHUF prepares physicians who will pursue careers in health policy, public health practice, and academia by providing a one-year program of rigorous academic training, practicum research, job shadowing, networking, and attending local and national conferences. The CES Program is a one-year, full-time program that combines an intensive year of training in leadership, health policy, public health and management, with a special focus on cultural competence and health disparities. Scholars in the CFHUF and CES programs complete academic work leading to a master’s degree in either public health (MPH) or in public administration (MPA). The COE Faculty Fellowship Program is designed to promote and support the careers of exceptional Harvard Medical School underrepresented minority junior faculty. The two-year, non-degree granting program provides specific funding intended to assist participants with their professional development as faculty member researchers and clinician/teachers at Harvard Medical School.
