Peer education is a popular method in reaching youth with sexual and reproductive health information. Though many different peer education curricula exist, there is little information on the planning and implementation of such programs. Oftentimes questions arise regarding structure and logistics of peer education, with few tools to direct those working in this arena. In effort to address these issues, IPPFWHR has developed an instrument to aid youth serving organizations with the design and implementation of peer education programs. The tool will help those who are responsible for peer education programs, planning new youth programs or want to integrate peer education into existing programs. For new programs the tool is a guide that includes a list of components to consider in program planning. Those who have existing programs can use it to review aspects in need of modification. The guidelines include: a summary of results from peer education programs and the necessary components of youth programs including SRH rights, youth participation, and including a gender focus and diversity perspective; a summary of necessary steps to adequately plan a peer education program; identifying, selecting, and training needed for youth to be integrated into a program; the implementation and activities for youth to carry out; and supervision of peer educators and program monitoring and evaluation. The guidelines include suggested formats and tools that can be easily adapted for each program, as well as a glossary of terms and a thorough bibliography.
