Structured on-the-job training: Innovation in skill transferring

BACKGROUND: To meet ever-increasing demand for trained PAC providers across the country, a structured OJT program was introduced to increase the number of training sites and qualified providers.

In order to ensure the availability of the qualified and competent PAC providers the intervention designed was to provide structured OJT to physician and nurse providers as well as increase the capacity of the hospitals to provide PAC services on a 24 hours basis and 7 days a week. The preparation included and consensus building among the key stakeholders, review of training material and definition of the role and responsibilities. Implementation has occurred at both central and district level sites.

Conclusions and lesson learned

Advantages: - Be able to train provider competency in their working areas without having to wait for a group-based training - Provide service sites with an opportunity to train their staff (clinical) with minimal support from outside and reduce staff movement/absence - No per diem and training allowances were provided to trainee or trainers reducing the cost of the training. - OJT methods were equally effective in transferring the knowledge and skills. The flexibility of schedule in OJT not only provided them opportunity to practice enough cases without hampering their regular work. - Can be replicated to those sites which meets the criteria - OJT supplements group-based training

Challenges: - Identifying alternatives to traditional "motivational factors" (for trainer and training site). - Maintaining quality of service and training (supervision) - Establishing effective system to manage training
