Traffic accident is a primary cause of death in most developed countries. Commercial motor vehicle crash, in particular, makes more serious human and material loss than private motor vehicle. This study was conducted to identify commercial drivers' personal and organizational characteristics related to their safe driving intention in Korea. Self-administered survey was conducted to 287 male drivers (156 bus and 132 truck drivers in two companies each) employed in four transportation companies in Seoul, Korea. Survey was announced to all employees by the driving schedule managers and survey responses were collected in shifting time and employee weekly meeting. The collected responses on safe driving intention, work stress, driving fatigue, job satisfaction, social support at work, driving schedule, disease history, health habits, and personal characteristics were encoded in SPSS statistical software program. Multiple regression analysis was used in data analysis. All respondents were men and more than 70% were married. Safe driving intention was greater in bus drivers than in truck drivers. Work characteristics among bus drivers were slightly more positive than those among truck drivers. Bus drivers' health habits were better than truck drivers' but truck drivers' health status was lower than bus drivers'. Drivers' active intention to safe driving was associated with great job satisfaction, long driving hour, not getting cold, regular exercise, and 6-7 hours of sleep. The employees driving long seemed to be more careful because of increased severity of traffic accident and long driving hour. These five characteristics explained 28.5% of variance of safe driving intention.
