Through a partnership of Wayne State University (WSU) Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the Voices of Detroit Initiative (VODI), and Walgreens, a health clinic was established in a Walgreens pharmacy in Highland Park, MI. The clinic is open one night a week offering health services such as medication and health information, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, and hypertension, asthma, diabetes and dyslipidemia monitoring and education. WSU-affiliated pharmacists and pharmacy students offer these services on a first-come, first-served basis.

The VODI Tobacco Use Reduction Project has been integrated with clinic services. Data about individual use of tobacco products and tobacco use within the home is collected. Tobacco users are asked about their intentions to quit with those planning to quit within the next six months referred to a free smoking cessation program offered through VODI. All individuals are offered educational materials specifically designed for use within an African American population that discuss tobacco use and cessation. Counseling about the ill effects of tobacco and encouragement to reduce tobacco use are incorporated into all services provided and pharmacists/pharmacy students emphasize the health and economic value of tobacco use cessation.

Population demographics, tobacco use, overall willingness to be referred for smoking cessation and subsequent attendance at smoking cessation classes will be discussed. The relationships among patient factors, such as age, gender, presence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and/or asthma, and referral adherence, class attendance and tobacco intensity of use and quit rates will be presented.
