Background: An estimated 2 million women in the U.S. present with one or more of the most common STDs during pregnancy every year. Research also indicates that a considerable number of women at high risk for STDs may be trying to become pregnant, however, educational materials specific to risk of STDs on pregnancy and related outcomes are limited. Although a variety of STD interventions exist, none are designed to specifically address the intersection between STDs and pregnancy.

Objectives: In an effort to respond to this unmet educational need, Danya International, Inc. (Danya) is developing "Deliver Free of STDs (DFS)," a video-based intervention designed for teen girls and young women who are risk for STDs and who intend to become pregnant. The intervention includes both English and Spanish versions of a patient education video and brochure for women patients, an accompanying educational product for male partners, and an online course for providers. Incorporating the theoretical constructs of the Information, Motivation, and Behavioral Skills AIDS Risk Reduction Model, DFS is designed to educate, motivate, and provide women with tools for risk-reduction.

Results: The video script and patient education brochure, focus group tested women representative of the target patient population, are believed to be acceptable, feasible, educational, and realistic.

Conclusions: Expanding prevention efforts targeting women is necessary to stem the rising rates of STDs among women of childbearing age. Individuals representative of target populations can be involved in the development of health interventions to increase acceptability and feasibility of products.
