Smoking cessation advice given by medical providers to patients is arguably one of the most important methods of intervention for smokers. But what happens after patients leave their doctor’s office or clinic? This study discusses how low income, urban patients follow-up with provider advice or other clinic interventions relating to smoking. Ten primary care clinics (public health clinics, federally qualified health centers, and free clinics) and one public health dental clinic in Detroit serving uninsured and underserved patients participated in a clinic system based program to help their patients quit smoking. Although the program focused on interventions implemented during the clinic visit, several resources were offered that would require the patient to follow-up after the clinic encounter. Three interventions are tracked, including filling nicotine replacement and bupropion prescriptions, seeking smoking cessation classes or counseling, and calling a state quitline advertised in clinic settings. All three services were provided free of charge to patients visiting participating clinic sites. Preliminary results reported will include quitline participation rates, cessation counseling participation rates, and analyses of NRT/bupropion prescriptions both written and filled. Impediments and facilitating factors to marketing and implementing such interventions within an underserved population will also be discussed.
