Jordan, BS, MPH, Department of Prevention and Community Health, George Washington University School of Public Health, 2175 K Street, NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20037, (202) 416-0497, sphhmj@gwumc.edu.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge and perceptions of healthcare providers to available unintentional injury materials to disseminate to parents of children aged 0-5 years and their perceptions of the development of a child safety center at their site.

Methodology: Survey participants provided informed consent and completed a 5 minute survey. The survey included scaled provider satisfaction questions to evaluate available unintentional injury materials and the development of a safety center. Healthcare providers rated their perception of patients and/or the patient’s parent(s)/guardian(s) satisfaction with available unintentional injury materials and the development of a safety center.

Results: 67% of respondents reported discussing unintentional injuries with their pediatric patients half of the time or less. Only 7% of respondents were extremely satisfied with home safety resources available for dissemination, while 37% were extremely dissatisfied or somewhat dissatisfied with the current resources. 74% of respondents were somewhat interested or extremely interested in having access to a demonstration room, while 86% of respondents reported their pediatric patients and/or the patient’s parent(s)/guardian(s) would be somewhat interested or extremely interested in a demonstration room.

Conclusions: This study provides insight into healthcare providers dissatisfaction with available unintentional injury resources. Of strong importance is the desire of healthcare providers to access a home safety demonstration room and to offer that access to pediatric patients and/or the patient’s parent(s)/guardian(s).
