Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) fire retardants are used in a wide variety of products, including electronics, foam, textiles and transportation. The three most common commercial products are penta-BDE, octa-BDE and deca-BDE. Because of concerns raised about rising levels of PBDEs in human milk, blood and tissues, the U.S.E.P.A. has been working with Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (GLCC), the only U.S. manufacturer of penta and octa-BDEs to phase out these chemical classes. GLCC has agreed to phase out the manufacture of penta and octa-BDEs by the end of 2004. GLCC will substitute Firemaster 550 for the penta and octa-BDE in products. The process of reaching this decision as well as the value and challenges of voluntary private industry actions to protect public health will be discussed.
