This is a research grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (# R06/CCR021527-01) in partnership with Multnomah County Health Department, Oregon Health Science University, Portland State University, Sankofaa Health Institute, the Latino Network, and the faith-based communities. This is a partnership with the faith community leadership.
The eight Community Health Workers (CHW) working in Poder es Salud/ Power for Health, work in the Latino and African American communities. The health disparities in these 2 communities are very similar. There is a need for information, advocacy and organizing.
We will talk about the three components of this project and how they interact with each other. We will talk about how Popular Education skills and techniques assist the communities to define their needs and meet their goals. We will talk about Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and the role it has in community capacity building. The CHWs in this project focus on community organizing skills and advocacy. They work to build a leadership network in the communities. We will bring examples of how this might work in other communities.
We will be bringing a Community Health Worker from one of our partner agencies
