David Chenoweth, PhD, Department of Health Education & Promotion, East Carolina University, Christenbury 205, Greenville, NC 27858-4353, 252-636-3241, hmacheno@coastalnet.com

In response to the growing problem of overweight and obesity in North Carolina, various public and private sector initiatives have been undertaken at the local, county, and statewide level. This presentation will highlight a process in which various stakeholders used statewide medical claims, workers’ compensation, and lost productivity cost data to determine the magnitude of overweight and obesity throughout North Carolina. Particular emphasis will focus on how several organizations use customized screening, programming, and incentive-based resources to combat the growing problem of overweight and obesity. The first campaign described will include actual success stories on the Eat Smart, Move More…North Carolina program designed and implemented by the State of North Carolina Health Department (Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit). In addition, program-specific goals and strategic actions directed to local, county, and state planners will be highlighted. The second profile will highlight several endeavors sponsored by North Carolina Prevention Partners directed to community and business settings. The third feature will include multi-faceted programs, incentives, and activities sponsored by Be Active North Carolina, Inc. The presentation will conclude with implications for future planning.
