In 2001, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a call to action to prevent and decrease overweight and obesity, assigning responsibility to all strata of society—individuals, families, communities, schools, worksites, health care, media, industry, and government. The CDC Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity’s National Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention program was established to prevent and reduce obesity and other chronic diseases by supporting states in the development and implementation of science-based interventions. This innovative approach acknowledges that the individual behavior changes necessary to prevent or reduce obesity take place in a wider environmental context. This session will provide an overview of national and state obesity prevention programs.
We will describe the environmental strategies for obesity prevention and control that form the program’s pillars and focus on how state programs are influencing environments that are related to these strategies, especially physical activity and nutrition such as breastfeeding, fruit and vegetable consumption and television viewing time. Drawing on the experience of 20 state programs, we will highlight some of the successful approaches states are using to influence these environments, including partnerships, coalitions, and external funding. We will share examples of innovative program implementation with multi-ethnic populations across the age spectrum. The session will conclude by discussing strategies for obesity prevention and control for the future.
