The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) was formed in 2001 to recognize and enhance the work being done in public health by independent, nonprofit collaborative entities. Many states have formed these multi-sector organizations with their unique partnerships with government, the business community, academia and other nonprofits. NNPHI currently has 24 member institutes and is working with individuals in a number of states on the development of new institutes. This session will focus on NNPHI’s Fostering Emerging Institutes Project, which is designed to help emerging public health institutes operate with heightened efficiency and direction, benefiting from lessons learned by the existing members of NNPHI. NNPHI provides technical assistance to staff and boards of emerging public health institutes so that they are able to carry out their roles with greater skills and confidence. Primary areas of work include: strategic planning, board development, the 501(c)(3) application process, resource development and budgets, and pairing with mentors from existing public health institutes.

The presentation will begin with an overview of NNPHI’s current members and emerging institutes. Next, NNPHI staff will present the Guide for Emerging Public Health Institutes. The session will conclude with several stories of emerging public health institutes. After each presenter there will be time for questions and answers.
