Supply and demand for health professionals: Concerns and new initiatives

Robyn I. Stone, DrPH, Institute for the Future of Aging Services, 2519 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20008, 202-508-1206, rstone@aahsa.org

An aging population places increased demands on the health care workforce, because of the disproportionate use of health services and the special needs of older populations. The future demand for health professionals and others to work in health care institutions, as well as in community-based programs will be great, and in many sectors, shortages have already begun to exert substantial pressures. Examples of various initiatives around the country designed to address the workforce crisis will be presented and discussed.
