Bicycle-Friendly and Walkable Communities: Necessary Conditions

Bill Wilkinson, National Center for Bicycling & Walking, 1506 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, 202-463-6622, bill@bikewalk.org

How we design of our communities impacts our health, directly and indirectly. We can develop communities that accommodate and encourage routine physical activity such as bicycling and walking; yet, too often, land-use and transportation design decisions create barriers instead of opportunities. We need to identify the conditions that must exist to make bicycling and walking good mode choices, and revise “standard” practices to achieve these objectives.
