Leading the change toward healthier communities with Smarth Growth

Governor Parris N. Glendening, President, Smart Growth Leadership Institute, 1200 18th St., NW, Suite 801, Washington, DC 20036, 202-207-3348, lisawald@comcast.net

The way we grow affects all aspects of our lives: our time with our families; the souls of our communities; the quality of our air, water and environment; and, most importantly, our health. Recent studies have shown a direct connection between sprawl and the increase in child obesity rates as well as the tripling of asthma rates in our children. In addition, recent studies have also shown the lack of ability of our aging population to receive health care due to lack of mobility and public transportation as well as a decrease in our aging population who drive. This presentation will describe the history and background of sprawl in America and explore the affects of sprawl on our nation’s health.
