The state health rankings project was began in 1990 as a tool to create public awareness of the differences in population health among the states. The index was design by a panel of experts using the Delphi process. Since 1990, the rankings have been published every year. Revisions are constantly undertaken to maintain the value of the index and to reflect the changes in measurement of population health. This talk will outline the history of the index, its challenges through the year and the lessons learned in utilizing a ranking method to raise awareness among the general population and public health officials about the complexity of health and its variation among states.
