International prisoner rights advocates have been meeting to promote correctional health reforms through the United Nations’ human rights agencies. In the US members of Congress and the US State Department are being pressured to use their authority to implement needed reforms. For the past three years citizen and professional organizations have been developing cooperative efforts including meetings in Geneva and in New York. While each nation has its own needs and its own particular problems, this new collaborative effort is assisting all participants in their work for human rights. Practical details of this international cooperative campaign will be presented.

Learning Objectives:

• Be able to recognize the ways NGOs are challenging human rights violations in prison and identify some of the problems and solutions in such work.
