This session will explore maternal risk factors associated with adverse birth outcomes or increased risks for child health. Folic acid use, depression, binge drinking, and hypertension, beginning in the preconception period, have measureable impacts on unintended pregnancy, low birthweight, infant and child health. Presenters will describe recent studies of maternal depression, binge drinking, multivitamin consumption, and chronic hyptertension and their relationship to infant and child health. Health care professionals can identify some of these risks in women by using appropriate screening tools during routine family planning, maternity care, and pediatric visits. Greater attention to common women's health concerns can increase the likelihood that women will receive appropriate care, and thus improve chances for infant and child well-being.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the prevalence of preconception binge drinking among women having a live birth 2. Describe the prevalence of unintended pregnancy among women having a live birth 3. Identify factors associated with vitamin use during the preconceptional period, during pregnancy, and postpartum 4. Articulate the importance of supporting postpartum use of vitamin supplements 5. Identify predictors of provider behavior learned from a national survey of health care providers about folic acid knowledge, awareness, and behavior. 6. Identify which provider types would benefit most from folic acid education. 7. Identify communication channels most widely utilized by physicians and non-physician providers. 8. Recognize which differences exist in maternal risk factors and birth outcomes between Haitian and African-American women
