Healthy Child Care America: Building Child Care Health Consultant Networks and Supporting Social-Emotional Development of Children in Child Care Settings
Recent kindergarten surveys indicate that between 30-40% of children entering kindergarten have a health or developmental condition that potentially interferes with their readiness to learn. With 70% of children under the age of 5 of working mothers being cared for in child care settings, child care represents a place where efforts can be focused on prevention and early detection of health and developmental conditions that impair a child's ability to enter school ready to learn. This session will discuss the role child care health consultants can play in promoting and protecting the health and safety of children in child care and discuss the assessment of social-emotional behavior in very young children.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the learner will be able to do the following: 1. discuss the findings of the Healthy Child Care Environments study. 2. describe a revenue-generating model for child care health consultation that adds value to child care while contributing to the sustainability of consultative services. 3. discuss how the training developed by HCC Connecticut improved the knowledge and practice of experienced health consultants. 4. assess social-emotioinal behavior in very young children. 5. describe public health factors identified by low-income families that contribute to children's early development and school readiness.
