LGBT Youth Research
Current topics in research focusing upon LGBT youth will be addressed including: the effects of homelessness among gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth; culturally tailoring substance use prevention for African American LGBTQ youth; an examination of resiliency and its effects upon the risk behaviors of sexual minority high school students; and a discussion of the experiences and needs of the families of LGBT youth.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: ·Identify the needs of homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual youth. ·Describe the health effects of homelessness for gay, lesbian, bisexual youth. ·Discuss factors that contribute to substance use and sexual risk taking among LGBTQ African American youth. ·Identify ways in which substance abuse prevention can be culturally tailored to meet the needs of LGBTQ African American youth. ·Define the concept of resiliency and how it is relevant to the risk behaviors of sexual minority youth. ·Identify differences in risk behaviors between sexual minority youth displaying resiliency and heterosexual youth exhibiting resiliency behaviors. ·Describe families’ reactions to the gender identity and sexual orientation of adolescents. ·Articulate the support needs for the families of LGBT adolescents.
