This session will present temporal trends in HIV infection risk for injecting drug users before and after the introduction of pharmacy-based syringe sales, the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and HIV seroconversion among injection drug users, and the use of a serologic testing algorithm with a cross-sectional study design to estimate HIV incidence. Additionally, the increasing role of the internet in some sexual liaisons will be examined, as will evidence that STD are more associated with the number of sex partners than with other behavioral risk factors.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe how modified HIV testing technology can be used to estimate HIV incidence. 2. Understand recent temporal trends in injecting and sexual risks and syringe acquisition sources among young injecting drug users (YIDUs). 3. Articulate an approach to mapping and investigating relationships between neighborhood and community level characteristics and individual health outcomes. 4. List the top five locations/means of meeting sexual partners among urban Ohio MSM with syphilis. 5. Identify the differences among those with STDs diagnosed at the Detroit Health Department, in terms of demographics, risk factors, and prior STD morbidity.
