Academic Epidemiologists and Local Public Health: Building Bridges
In this session the learner will hear about developments in epidemiology education. Programs that bring together the educational process with public health epidemiology, such as internships in local health departments and training a student epidemiology core to provide surge capacity in emergencies, will be discussed. Also covered are programs that extend epidemiology education through internet-based lectures and through specialized curricula for high school students and educators.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Discuss how to recruit and train PH students to provide surge capacity to local public health departments in PH emergencies. 2. Describe examples of opportunities for student involvement at a state health department. 3. Identify components of a successful collaboration between an academic institution and a state health department. 4. Access educational resources from a global library of lectures on epidemiology. 5. Describe the extension of epidemiology training to high school students.
