This session will explore the epidemiology of vaccine preventable diseases. Presenters will discuss the transmission pattern and the magnitude of a measles outbreak in a boarding school, the utilization of publicly-funded health services for treatment of non-fatal chicken pox, the effectiveness of the 2003-2004 trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine, and the integration of multiple factors in determining which vaccines are indicated for adults.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. List two measures taken to control a measles outbreak. 2. Describe population based secular trends in chickenpox incidence. 3. Recognize the limitations involved in using particular study designs to determine vaccine effectiveness. 4. List 2 strengths and 2 limitations of patient self assessment of immunization status.
