The session showcases papers submitted by students that deal with issues related to infant, child, and family health. Topics include: 1) the impact of budget cuts on the MCH infrastructure, 2) prenatal care quality, 3) family planning, 4) family interactions, 5) breastfeeding, and 6) nutrition and physical activities. This student session was initiated by the Maternal and Child Health Section to promote academic contributions and achievement in maternal and child health among graduate students. See individual abstracts for the presenting author's disclosure statement.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the health risks for women and children in Connecticut, in light of recent cutbacks. 2. describe ways to measure the quality of prenatal care. 3. Identify homeless women who are at highest risk for unplanned pregnancy and factors that contribute to their nonuse of contraception. 4. Articulate why a more complete conceptual model of pregnancy intention that includes male viewpoints may be beneficial. 5. Discuss the impact of home social environments on child health. 6. Describe factors that increase or decrease the quality of maternal and infant interaction and its effects on breastfeeding. 7. Evaluate whether the determinants of stunting are different from wasting. 8. Identify avenues for the design of interventions for Latino youth that decrease obesity risk.
