Workers' Freedom To Join Unions: It's A Public Health Issue
The freedom of workers to form unions is a fundamental human right. This right is affirmed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights -- the cornerstone document of the modern human rights movement -- and is recognized in principle in the United States by the National Labor Relations Act and the Constitution itself. However, the freedom of America's workers to form unions is heavily suppressed. Newly introduced federal legislation, the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 1925/H.R. 3691), provides badly needed protections. This session will examine why the freedom to form unions is a public health issue. It will explore the relationship between workers' freedom to form unions and: job-related health insurance coverage and quality; the ability of workers to gain protections under public health related labor protections such as the OSHAct; the quality of health care delivered to the public, and such public health indicators as life expectancy and infant mortality.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the participants will be able to: 1) Analyze and discuss the connection, and reasons for the connection, between workers' freedom to form unions and job-related health insurance rates and quality; 2) Analyze and discuss the connection, and reasons for the connection, between workers' freedom to form unions and the ability of workers to gain access to, and protections under, legislated public health related labor protections such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act; 3) Analyze and discuss the connection, and the reasons for the connection, between health care workers' freedom to form unions and the quality of care received by the public; 4) Analyze and discuss the connection, and reason for the connection, between workers' freedom to form unions and such public health indicators as life expectancy and infant mortality.
