War and Women's Health: Bodies on the Battlefield
War has a devastating and immeasurable effect on women and children. This is an often overlooked fact of war and has little or no role in the minds of decision makers. Some of these effects are subtle and indirect. War zones breed the destruction of crucial family, community, educational, health care institutions. With reckless disregard, women and children are often most effected. To clearly depict the brutalities of war, video clips of Sierra Leone survivors of sexual assault will be shown.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: (1) Describe the nature and context of intimate partner violence experienced by women in refugee camps and war zones; (2) Discuss the implications and effects of war-related violence against women and children and the need for accountability; and (3) Identify public health interventions to assist women and children who are unfortunate victims of violence as a result of war.
