The National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Cancer Society have collaboratively commissioned papers on lessons learned from cancer screening intervention research. This synthesis is not another literature review, but provides perspective on how past conceptualization and conduct of intervention research to increase cancer screening can guide future research. Topics for discussion include the issues to consider before promoting the uptake of screening tests, the development and importance of social and behavioral intervention research, lessons learned from cancer screening intervention research in community settings, dissemination of effective cancer screening interventions, screening in an organized or opportunistic setting, and future directions for research on cancer screening interventions. Application of these lessons should not only accelerate the uptake of effective cancer screening tests currently available, but also guide future directions for research and provide accessible information that the public health community can use.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: •Identify at least 5 key lessons from behavioral research that are related to uptake of cancer screening; •Identify at least 3 key lessons learned from intervention research in community settings related to increasing cancer screening and articulate 3 new directions for community-based intervention research; •Identify challenges to dissemination of effective interventions, and describe the roles of responsible parties; •Distinguish between organized and opportunistic screening, and understand the benefits and limitations of each model for service delivery; •Describe new challenges to social and behavioral research in cancer screening.
