Health and Obesity: Lifestyles, Behaviors, and Perceptions
This session explores the intricate links between obesity, health, and quality of life. Topics include the associations between body mass index (BMI), obesity, and quality of life for older Americans and for adults without any chronic diseases, the perception of general health status in relation to weight status, a comparison of the prevalence of obesity in areas with and without supermarkets, and changes in obesity and smoking based on SES.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the relationship between body mass index and physical and non-physical measures of quality of life. 2. Recognize the strengths of using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) to measure health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for subjects with a given condition (overweight/obesity). 3. Assess the perceptions of general health status in relation to weight status. 4. Identify the potential impact that availability of healthy foods has on the prevalence of overweight and obesity. 5. Discuss state trends in socioeconomic disparities in obesity and smoking.
