Session: Addressing Unsafe Abortion in International Settings
3219.0: Monday, November 8, 2004: 12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Oral
Addressing Unsafe Abortion in International Settings
Unsafe abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Women seek abortions when they have unwanted pregnancies, and they put themselves at risk of unsafe abortion when access to safe and legal services is restricted. Thus, when women lack full access to family planning services, and where laws restrict access to abortion, unsafe abortion can be expected to be high, along with high associated maternal mortality and other sequelae. The International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994 called on nations to address unsafe abortion within the context of women’s rights and integrated reproductive health programs. This panel will explore progress toward this goal since the Cairo conference, as well as specific viewpoints on unsafe abortion from several different countries. The presentations will discuss consequences of unsafe abortion, knowledge of abortion laws and access, decision making factors in obtaining abortions, and approaches to abortion care. The discussions should assist programmers in understanding the magnitude of this problem, factors that affect the prevalence and consequences of unsafe abortion, and successful programming approaches.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1) articulate the magnitude of the problem of unsafe abortion worldwide 2) state the main adverse consequences of unsafe abortion in international settings 3) describe factors that influence womens' decisions to obtain abortions 4) describe a model for introducing safe abortion care where abortion is legal
