Session: Bioterrorism and Epidemiology: Questions, Methods and Outcomes 2
4199.0: Tuesday, November 9, 2004: 2:30 PM-4:00 PM
Oral
Bioterrorism and Epidemiology: Questions, Methods and Outcomes 2
The second session on bioterrorism and epidemiology focuses on surveillance systems, issues, and applications. Specific topics include assessing the sensitivity of poison control and EMS data to detect possible bioterrorism events, examining a health monitoring system for a large metropolitan area, and a local health department’s application of a model biosurveillance system. The set up and use of a large syndromic surveillance system will be presented along with a discussion of redefining syndromic surveillance case definitions to enhance outbreak detection.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Understand the difference between traditional and non-traditional data for disease surveillance and agents of bioterrorism. 2. Recognize the importance of coordination between the military and civilian systems. 3. Identify issues related to collaborating with numerous public health jurisdictions. 4. Understand how reported outbreaks can be used to validate syndromic surveillance systems.
