There is ample documentation that many sick children, especially from poor or marginalized families, do not obtain necessary treatment in health facilities. Thus, the importance of community-based services to reduce the mortality and morbidity in children under 5 years has long been recognized. Community-IMCI was developed to expand access and the continuum of care from clinics to household/communities. This session will include 4 presentations from diverse developing countries (in Africa, Latin America and Asia) focusing on community-based interventions to improve newborn and child health. The panel will discuss the different types of community health worker or community-based organizations used, as well as diverse interventions, from focused newborn care, traditional C-IMCI, to a complex range of integrated services for mother and child. The experiences presented will also include evaluation of effectiveness or impact of the community-based interventions, as well as highlight areas needing more study.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: • Articulate the role of community-based health services for newborns and children, including case management in Community-IMCI (CCM), and their potential to reduce under-five mortality • Describe the contribution of NGOs and community-based organizations in scaling-up malaria prevention and other child health services, especially in the context of c-IMCI • Identify limitations of community-based health services for newborns and children, as well as topics that require further research
