An exciting new collaboration of community-based organizations, public health professionals, and government agencies will conduct a “Town Hall Meeting on Environmental Justice and Health Disparities.” This session will provide participants at the 2004 APHA Annual Meeting an opportunity to provide recommendations on actions such a collaboration should undertake to better identify environmental contributions to health disparities and to more effectively address environmental justice and health disparities. This session is in keeping with the APHA 2004 Annual Meeting theme, “Public Health and the Environment,” as well as the APHA’s priority goal of eliminating health disparities. This session is being jointly organized by the EPA Office of Environmental Justice and the DHHS Office on Minority Health in conjunction with APHA. It grows out of efforts to link environmental justice and health disparities issues by the several federal agencies, notably in the form of a 2003 federal agency symposium, “Building Healthy Environments to Eliminate Health Disparities.” The recommendations from APHA participants at this session will form the basis for future APHA sponsored leadership dialogues on the more effective strategies to address environmental justice and health disparities. This session will be moderated by Kojo Namdi, acclaimed Washington, DC-based TV and radio talk show host. Namdi’s shows cover a wide range of local, national and international issues including equity, health, and environment. |
