5006.1: Wednesday, November 10, 2004: 8:30 AM-10:00 AM
Oral
Open Meeting of The APHA Taskforce on Universal Healthcare
Purpose: To report on the progress and next steps of the Taskforce and the development of APHA positions and activities in support of Universal healthcare. Universal access to health care has always been a priority of the American Public Health Association, and has been affirmed in policy statements for decades. In 2000, the Executive Board reaffirmed the "14 Points on Universal Health Care" adopted by the Board in the early 1990’s. Objectives: The continuing crisis in access and care at local, state and national levels continues unabated and if anything the gaps have enlarged. The purpose of this session is several fold To report on the activities of the association, mobilize support and input for universal healthcare within the association, advance the issues of public health as part of the universal healthcare debate, and set the context for further advocacy and action. The program and invited speakers will discuss these issues in the context of APHA’s major priority of access and universal healthcare. All members are invited to attend.
Learning Objectives: Learning Objectives; Present the challenge of the uninsured, and the continuing crisis in gaps in healthcare in the United States Summarize the APHA position on the public health implications of universal healthcare Set the agenda for public health advocacy to ensure universal healthcare in the United States Identify opportunities for members to participate in activities to close the gaps in healthcare on state and national levels.
