The National Research Council of the National Academies will offer awards to postdoctoral and senior researchers for basic and applied research to be conducted in participating federal laboratories throughout the US. Research opportunities are available in all areas of science and engineering. Many awards are available to non-US as well as US nationals. The purpose of this program is to provide young scientists of exceptional promise and ability, and experienced scientific investigators, with the ability to choose their own research project and devote full time to research without the distractions of permanent career positions. This program also provides access to state-of-the art facilities often unique to the government research enterprise. The federal laboratories in turn receive exposure to bright, highly-motivated researchers with innovative ideas.
Awards include a competitive stipend ($36,000-$65,000 for recent Ph.D. recipients; higher for additional experience), support for research and professional travel, and health insurance.
For detailed program information, including list of participating laboratories and instructions on how to apply, see the Web site at www.national-academies.org/rap. Applicants should begin a dialog with prospective advisors at the lab as early as possible, before their anticipated application deadline. Applications must be submitted online directly to the NRC. Annual application deadlines are February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1.
