Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIO) manage local deployments of systems that promote and facilitate healthcare data exchange as part of the National Health Information Network (NHIN). As with many systems in the United States, there is no “one size fits all” solution. To be successful, public health must be an active participant in the development and deployment of these systems. This session will review five models of data integration and four models of application integration that can be used to define the architecture for a RHIO deployment. The features, strengths, and limitations of each model will be detailed. Examples will be provided from RHIO systems in place and emerging in the United States today. The conceptual roadmap offered in this presentation will assist projects in determining an appropriate architecture for data and application integration in their setting, and can form the basis for more detailed analysis and examination of system requirements and infrastructure needs.
