PURPOSE: To describe, age, gender, race, and income level associated with smoking cigarettes and its prevalence in the Unites States population aged 12 and above. METHODS: Using National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2002 (NSDUH) data, we identified current smokers as all the respondents who had smoked 100 cigarettes in their life, and have also smoked in past 30 days. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of smoking cigarettes was 23.8% and 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was 23.1 – 24.5% (n = 54079). Compared to females, males were more likely to be smokers (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.57 – 1.80). While compared to Hispanics, African-Americans and Whites were more likely to be smokers; OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.0 – 1.37 and OR 2.13, 95% CI 1.88 – 2.41, respectively. Yearly total family income was assessed in four groups. Compared to the group making 75 thousand or more, statistically significant association was observed in all three groups with smoking cigarettes; OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.09 – 1.35 in the group making 50 – 74 thousand, OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.35 – 1.62 in the group making 20 – 49 thousand, and OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.51 – 1.89 in the group making less than 20 thousand per year. While compared to 18-25 year group, statistically significant association was observed in all other groups of 26-34, 35-49, and 50 and older. CONCLUSION: Males were more likely to be current smokers and an increase in smoking cigarettes was associated with an increase in age and a decrease in income level.
