The newborn screening (NBS) system is more than just screening; it includes follow-up, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation. In 2003, Kim, et al., identified the medical home as the ideal place for the child and family to receive this quality follow-up care. They concluded that linking state NBS programs with medical homes and other community services will assist in ensuring identified children have access to comprehensive, coordinated care, and reduce unnecessary time and frustration for state NBS programs.¹ Through a partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics will be soliciting “best practices” on how state NBS programs are establishing linkages with medical homes in their state. Strategies will be presented on how states have effectively integrated NBS programs and medical homes. This partnership naturally facilitates communication, support and access to needed community and thereby ensures that children and/ or youth receive optimal healthcare. Resource materials regarding the medical home, newborn screening and other American Academy of Pediatrics related programs will be available.
