Healthy People 2010 is a comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention agenda for the United States. With 467 objectives in 28 focus areas, Healthy People 2010 is designed to improve the health of all people during the first decade of the 21st century. The goal of HP2010 Focus Area 2 Arthritis, Osteoporosis and Chronic Back Conditions is to prevent illness and disability related to arthritis and other rheumatic conditions, osteoporosis, and chronic back conditions. FA2 is a new area, and only 1 of its 11 objectives was addressed in HP2000. The primary data source for tracking these objectives is the National Health Interview Survey. All 5 of the objectives that did not have baseline data at the beginning of the decade in this focus area became measurable with the release of the 2002 NHIS. Furthermore, 3 other objectives had their definitions revised based on new data from the 2002 NHIS. Using data from the 2002 and 2003 NHIS and other sources, this presentation will assess progress of the arthritis, osteoporosis and chronic back conditions objectives towards meeting their national targets for the year 2010. Additionally, progress towards the second overarching Healthy People 2010 goal of eliminating health disparities will be discussed.
