Abstract #105034

Incorporating Online Learning into a Continuing Education Program for Nurses

Pamela B. Harper, MPH, Rita Wieczorek, EdD, RN, Mary Lavan, BA, and Karen Kroder, BA. Education & Health Promotion Department, March of Dimes, 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605, 914-997-4455, pharper@marchofdimes.com

The March of Dimes has provided continuing education to perinatal nurses for over 30 years through a series of print modules that can be used for group or independent study. Over 5,000 nurses receive continuing education credits from the March of Dimes every year. In 2003, the organization launched its first online continuing education module "Understanding the Behavior of Term Infants" for both group and independent study. A second module on preterm labor was launched in 2004.

This presentation will analyze evaluation results and user information from both online and print materials, contrast and compare users of the print and online channels, describe marketing approaches used for the two channels, and discuss the process for integrating an online approach into a traditional print program. User variables include professional and educational status, employment setting, type of work, type of clients served, length of time employed in the health care field, method of learning about the materials, and prior use of March of Dimes materials. Evaluation data include sales figures for the two channels and user assessment of the quality and effectiveness of the material.
