A jointly held position was created between three entities to add continuity to health workforce development in Minnesota. The person in this position serves The University of Minnesota Academic Health Center, the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, and the Minnesota Department of Health. The position was created to support efforts to build an academic and experiential pipeline that moves students from middle and high school into academic training in health careers resulting in a stronger health workforce in Minnesota. The position offers a systemic approach to developing a future health and public health workforce through broad, comprehensive efforts to define workforce trends, identify and overcome barriers for students accessing education, and creating innovative experiential opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in the health and public health field are all part of this comprehensive approach. Each organization has created their own objectives, and then collaborated to identify joint objectives. Efforts are underway to create strategic alliances with community groups, K-12 schools, and health professionals to build a sense of joint responsibility for the future health workforce.
