Timely and reliable performance information can facilitate compliance with evidence-based practices. Comparative performance information can help motivate providers and supply positive feedback regarding improvements in clinical practice. Data repositories for monitoring evidence-based practices can become rather large, particularly if all providers in the state or nation are contributing information. Having a large clinical repository helps ensure the meaningfulness of comparative data, yet can pose challenges for distributing performance reports to providers. To enable timely aggregation and reporting of performance data, an online analytical processing tool (OLAP) is ideal. Users may quickly analyze performance information, which has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. Access to these Web based reports, and the data repository which populates the reports, can be controlled using role-based authentication. This enables different providers, data users, contractors, and etc. different levels of access to the underlying data. An OLAP application used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to monitor clinical performance will be demonstrated. Tabular reports, as well as graphical reports may be developed. If desirable, users may customize reports to answer their specific performance questions. Additionally, standard summary reports, which require no customization, may be embedded in the application.
