Diane R. Renzulli, MSPH, Leslie Hurtig, MPA, Sara Black, MSSW, MPA, and Maryellen Oliver, MSEd. Philadelphia Health Management Corporation, 260 South Broad Street, 18th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19102, 215-985-2537, renzulli@phmc.org

Many health professionals providing direct services in the public health field—health educators, social workers, certified addiction counselors, clinical staff, and similar professionals—must receive professional development training in order to maintain their licenses to practice. In addition, many funding agencies require agencies provide ongoing training to direct service professionals.

In order to meet these needs in a cost-effective manner, the Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC), a nonprofit public health agency that has served the Greater Philadelphia region since 1972, has created an onsite training program to educate health professionals on a diverse range of issues such as: confidentiality, cultural competency, ethics, HIV/AIDS, psychopharmacology, sexually transmitted diseases, suicide precautions, and working with LGBTQ clients.

This session will describe PHMC's training programs, including topic choices, training format, evaluation, and how to implement cost-effective strategies to provide quality training for direct service professionals. Participants will learn: 1.)How to identify appropriate training session topics; 2.)How to develop a comfortable learning environment for professional development training; 3.) How to evaluate professional development trainings; 4.) How to implement cost-saving strategies for creating an onsite professional development training program.
