"Become a NorWALKER” is a community-wide project focusing on environmental or policy change for cardiovascular disease. Based on results of a Community Health Assessment for the City of Norwalk, a workgroup was formed to identify and develop strategies promoting healthy lifestyles for improving cardiovascular status. Traditional and non-traditional partners were invited to participate. The workgroup identified risk factors and chose increasing physical activity as a goal. To reduce the common barriers to exercise of time, availability and cost, they selected to map out neighborhood-walking routes for residents. Working with neighborhood associations, ten “Become a NorWALKER” walking maps were developed. The 3-year project was funded through the Connecticut Department of Pubic Health. Colorful route maps included information on local historical significance while others described environmental features. A social marketing campaign was developed to promote physical activity and use of the maps. A community-wide advertising campaign utilizing numerous venues promoted a consistent message to take action. Maps were made available at locations throughout the city and on the internet at www.norwalkhealth.com/walkingroutes. Partnering with the local YMCA enabled walking arrangements during inclement weather. Building an alliance with neighborhood schools encouraged program sustainability.
Evaluation included surveys of participants at community events, monitoring web-site statistics visits, and requests for maps.
