Based upon several years of development and research, this paper presents the findings of a model designed for public health managers' leadership competencies. Initial work on this project was presented at the 2004 meeting in Washginton DC. Over the past twelve months substantive development and content focus has occurred based upon a quantitative study of members of APHA's Health Administration interest section. This reserach supports the 2004 core competency model, but it extends this material making it ideal for public health managers to use in the development of both emerging leadership skills, as well as the on-going professional enrichment of existing leadership practices. Given the constantly changing challenges of public health practice and the need for evidence-based management and practice, this model provides a new conceptual paradigm for leaders in the field. The program will: 1. offer participants a concise yet comprehensive public health leadership development model; 2. present research data which warrants this model; 3. offer the justification for the selected content and information; and 4. suggests application strategies for a variety of public health issues and settings.
