The Center for Community Health Education Research and Service, Inc. (CCHERS) is a partnership between Boston Medical Center, the Boston Public Health Commission, Boston University School of Medicine, Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences and fifteen community health centers, established in 1991. Recent developments in efforts to eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in health have promoted community-based participatory research as a model for improving the quality of health services and clinical research being conducted; enhancing the capacity of communities to engage as partners in the research enterprise; and improving the health outcomes of vulnerable populations. CCHERS is often approached by academic researchers interested in access to community populations. As a community based organization it represents a sophisticated and credible community partner with the capacity to support organized and collective research among its partner community health centers.
This session will focus on the challenges faced by community organizations looking to partner with academic institutions. It will discuss the implications of community-based participatory research in communities of color with a focus on the elimination of racial/ethnic disparities in health.
