Abstract #109722

A model rapid, low-cost needs assessment for use in planning maternal and neonatal health programs

Mary-Elizabeth M. Reeve, PhD, MPH, Global Programs, March of Dimes, 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605, (914) 997-4247, mreeve@marchofdimes.com

Worldwide reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality remains a major public health challenge. Too often, health interventions are designed and implemented without collecting the data necessary to effectively target high-risk populations. To do so, program planners need to develop a better understanding of epidemiological, socio-cultural and health system factors that influence maternal and neonatal health at the community level. Drawing on her experience in Asia, Eastern Europe and South America, the author will present a model for a rapid, low-cost perinatal needs assessment and discuss its use as a planning tool for maternal and neonatal health programs.
