Evidence based public health: The Internet as a resource

Karen E. Peters, DrPH, Illinois Prevention Research Center/Institute for Health Research and Policy, University of Illinois at Chicago, 1747 W. Roosevelt, Ste 500, Chicago, IL 60608, 312-413-4944, kpeters@uic.edu and William Baldyga, DrPH, University of Illinois at Chicago, Health Research & Policy Centers, 850 West Jackson Blvd, Suite 400, (M/C 275), Chicago, IL 60607.

The knowledge, skills and ability of local public health department staff to locate reliable evidence for programming efforts is hampered by difficulty in retrieving and utilizing evidence based strategies to inform local public health practice. The Illinois Prevention Research Center (IPRC) has directed its evidence based public health training efforts to the local public health workforce. IPRC training and education efforts are focused on identifying, describing and disseminating Internet-based evidence recommendations and guidelines for public health programming and evaluating the utilization of the information among the trainees.

This session will review the web resources featured in the IPRC training courses. Among the web-based resources described and reviewed are the CDC's Guide to Community Preventive Services and Cancer Control Planet, and AHRQ's, Evidence Based Practice Program. International resources available through the Cochrane Collaboration –Public Health Field will also be described. Evaluation of the IPRC training programs reveals that participants have increased knowledge of systematic approaches to program development and are able to access and interpret existing data systems and methods of using evidence based summaries. IPRC trainees have reported using evidence based information for program planning, intervention development and grant writing.
